Construction Project Startup Checklist
Essential steps checklist before starting any construction project in Tanzania.
1. Verify land ownership and title
Confirm you have a valid title deed or land allocation. Check that the land use designation permits your proposed construction.
2. Engage registered architect
Hire an architect registered with ARB to prepare building design, drawings and coordinate the permit process.
3. Engage registered engineer
Hire a structural engineer registered with ERB for structural design, calculations and supervision.
4. Conduct soil investigation
Engage a geotechnical laboratory to conduct soil testing and provide foundation design recommendations.
5. Obtain building permit
Submit complete application to the relevant municipal council and obtain building permit before starting construction.
6. Obtain environmental clearance
If required, submit EIA or Environmental Clearance application to NEMC and obtain certificate.
7. Register with NSSF and WCF
Register your construction company with NSSF and WCF for employee social security and workers compensation.
8. Register with CRB (contractors)
If you are a contractor, ensure valid CRB registration in the appropriate class for your project.
9. Prepare construction contract
Prepare a formal construction contract with scope of work, timeline, payment schedule and dispute resolution mechanism.
10. Arrange project insurance
Obtain contractor all risk insurance, public liability insurance, and workmen's compensation insurance.
11. Set up site facilities
Prepare construction site with hoarding, site office, worker facilities, material storage and safety equipment.
12. Order construction materials
Place orders for concrete, aggregates, blocks, steel and other materials. Confirm delivery schedules.
