Investor Startup Checklist Tanzania
Complete checklist for foreign and local investors starting a business in Tanzania.
1. Conduct market research
Research the market opportunity, competition, regulatory requirements and potential challenges in your sector.
2. Choose business structure
Select the appropriate legal structure: private limited company, branch office, partnership or sole proprietorship.
3. Register company with BRELA
Complete company name search, prepare memorandum and articles of association, and submit for registration.
4. Obtain TIC certificate (for foreign investors)
Submit investment application to TIC for certificate of incentives. Minimum investment USD 500,000 applies.
5. Register for taxes with TRA
Apply for TIN, VAT registration (if applicable), income tax registration and other applicable tax registrations.
6. Open bank account
Open a corporate bank account with a Tanzanian bank. Minimum deposit and documentation required.
7. Register with NSSF and WCF
Register your company with NSSF for employee retirement benefits and WCF for workers compensation.
8. Obtain sector-specific licenses
Depending on your sector, obtain licenses from relevant regulators (CRB for construction, TCRA for telecom, etc.).
9. Apply for work permits (expatriate staff)
Submit work permit applications for expatriate employees through Immigration Department with TIC assistance.
10. Secure business premises
Identify and lease or purchase suitable business premises. Verify zoning and business use permissions.
11. Hire employees
Register with NSSF and WCF as an employer. Prepare employment contracts compliant with Tanzanian labour law.
12. Obtain environmental permits (if required)
If your business has environmental implications, register with NEMC and obtain required environmental clearances.
